The Shrine was established over 150 years ago with the idea of being the "playground for Masonry." In 1870, a group of Masons often gathered for lunch at the Knickerbocker Cottage on Sixth Avenue in New York City. At a special table on the second floor, a particularly fun-loving group of men met regularly. Among the regulars were Dr. Walter M. Fleming and William J. “Billy” Florence, an actor. This group frequently discussed the idea of starting a new fraternity for Masons—one focused on fun and fellowship rather than just rituals. Fleming and Florence took this idea seriously and decided to act on it.
Their vision not only led to the creation of the Shrine, but in 1922, it also gave rise to the "World's Greatest Philanthropy"—Shriners Children's. This hospital system provides treatment for children with a variety of orthopedic conditions and burns at no out-of-pocket expense to their parents or families.

Once you receive your Master Mason degree, you become eligible to join the Shriners. As a Shriner, you become part of an incredible philanthropic organization--Shriners Children's.
In addition to being part of this meaningful cause, you will join a fraternal organization that prioritizes fun, second only to helping children. You can become a Shrine Clown and experience the joy of acting like a kid again. Whether it’s riding motorcycles, driving mini-cars, or marching in parades, there’s always something exciting to keep you entertained.
