In 1870 a group of Masons gathered frequently for lunch at the Knickerbocker Cottage on Sixth Avenue in New York City. At a special table on the second floor a particularly fun-loving group of men met regularly. Among the regulars were Walter M. Fleming, M.D. and William J. “Billy” Florence, an actor. The group frequently talked about starting a new fraternity for Masons – one centered on fun and fellowship, more than ritual. Great Lakes Shrine Association
We have a great history and legacy which has been given to succeeding generations of Shriners by some very foresighted and and insightful Shriners. We owe them a debt of gratitude, respect and continued effort to be the best possible Shrine Association possible.

Grand Lodge of Michigan
What is a Mason? A Mason is a member of the oldest and largest goodwill fraternity in the world, known as Masonry or Freemasonry. Masonry teaches that each man has a duty to make life better, not just for himself, but for everyone. Whether that means helping to clean up the environment, volunteering on civic projects, or helping a child learn how to read - Masons make a difference every day. Scottish Rite - Valley of Bay City
The Scottish Rite is one of three branches of Freemasonry in which a Master Mason may proceed after he has completed the three degrees of Symbolic Masonry, better known as "The Blue Lodge." The Scottish Rite confers twenty-nine degrees, usually in dramatic allegory, from the 4th to 32nd, at what are called "Reunions." The Companions of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Michigan work in active support of many numerous Masonic, Civic and National Charitable, Benevolent and Service Organizations and Foundations. Below will be listed the three major charitable Organizations and Foundations that the Grand Chapter and its Companions directly support. In addition to these the local Chapters and the Individual Companions support and work for the benefit of the Community and the members thereof, frequently without informing the Community, Organization or Individual that it is Royal Arch Masonry at work for them.
