Hi Ill. Sir John

We are very pleased to say that;

*Towers Perrin, a consulting firm, worked closely with our Joint Boards, Salaries, Personnel & Retirement Committee, and HQ staff in developing a plan for a re-organization at the Shriners International HQ.  The details of this plan have been communicated to headquarters, hospitals Executive Staff,  Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors.   This was rolled out via WebEx and provided everyone the same information at the same time.

In conjunction with our Strategic Action Plan development, under the leadership of Imperial Sir Raoul Frevel, with collaboration with the Salary and Personnel Committee, under the leadership of Imperial Sir Terry McGuire,  new titles have been given to the many departments at headquarters.  Those that were SHC Corporate Directors of their departments became Vice Presidents etc.  More information will be communicated as we go along.

Long time Managing Attorney, Jay Fleisher has decided to step down and retire.  We thank Jay for the many years of service to our organization.  We all wish him the best in the future.   Ms. Laurie Spieler has been appointed as the Interim Vice President, Legal until that vacancy is filled.

*Scott Laubisch became our new Vice President for Planning effective 4/21/08.  He was previously the regional Vice President for Strategy, Innovation, Development & Marketing with the PeaceHealth-Lower Columbia Region in Longview, Washington.

We now have a Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Georgia to help the state with children that would qualify for our services.  Noble Roger Wise of Atlanta has done a tremendous job of working together with Imperial Sir Gene Bracewell and the Governor of Georgia, as well as our Staff at the Greenville Hospital.  In February we had the opportunity to sign this document with the 4 Georgia Temples in attendance in Atlanta.  This could lead to MOU for many other states.

*The Joint Boards approved the construction of a replacement healthcare facility in Montreal.  The new facility will be built within the McGill University Health Centre's Glen Yard campus.  This is great news to those in the Northeast Shrine Association as well as for the membership in Canada.

A pilot satellite clinic was approved for Winnipeg.  SHC-Canadian will oversee its activities.

*We are pleased to inform you that the Joint Boards during its deliberations last week supported the construction of the St. Louis replacement hospital on the Washington University campus.  The approved capital budget included funding for the bench research lab fit-out as well as a 260 space parking garage amounts to around 170 million dollars.

*The Joint Boards authorized the re-opening of negotiations with LA County for the use of property on the LA County Hospital campus for the potential SHC-LA replacement hospital.  A letter was recently sent to the CEO for the County of Los Angeles with a request to re-open discussions.  We have also learned that an anonymous donor has come forward with the largest contribution ever in the history of the Shrine.  A pledge of up to 300 million dollars to fund the construction of the LA Hospital was made. This was indeed great news in light of the financial issues we are faced with.

*The Joint Boards was updated on the status of the construction of the new PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) at SHC-Philadelphia.  The construction is projected to be completed in July.   Also under construction in Philadelphia is the new Research Laboratory at Temple Medical School.

*A great deal of work was put into developing HQ action plans in conjunction with the implementation of the Strategic Plan.  These action plans will be provided to the hospitals as well as guidance on the development of local strategic and actions plans in the near future.

*A new Expense Reimbursement Policy has been developed and approved.  That will be rolled out to those who use such an instrument.  All to do with new IRS regulations.

We certainly appreciate all the work that this group of professional contribute to our hospitals.  Thanks to all of you.

Finally, more great news,   our headquarters building was certified yesterday as meeting the EPA's criteria for an Energy Star rated building. The Shriners international Headquarters has the honor of being the 44 office building in Florida with this distinction. This rating comes after much progress made as a result of fine tuning our mechanical systems and taking steps toward energy conservation. Most credit goes to Jerry Personius, has staff, and Steve Nordstrom. The benefits we achieve are lower energy cost, displaying that we are good custodians of our donor dollars, and that we are very sensitive to the environment. I also want to recognize Delbert Reed of Houston who has been working with us for the last several years and overseen the process of becoming certified. It should also be understood that the Houston hospital is the only other Energy Star rated facility within Shriners and has been so for many years. Delbert was awarded last year with the highest award possible by having the most energy efficient facility as determined by the EPA's criteria. With this now behind us, we are working forward to establishing a program for the other hospitals to improve their EPA ratings toward becoming certified themselves. This was all in response to the concern raised by the Budget Committee years back relevant to escalating utility costs. Ongoing facility improvements authorized by our Boards and practicing energy conservation will assist us in continuing our success.

The Justin Timberlake/Shriners Hospital for Children open is really moving forward.  Remember, the date is October 13th thru the 19th.  We would like to see a lot of Shriners as well as Employees come out to help with the event.  Volunteers will have to pay $25 for the privilege of being a volunteer, but this gives you access to the entire week of festivities plus parking etc.  If interested, you will have to contact the office in Las Vegas to get your tickets.  This year, unlike last year, we are the Title and Host for the event.  Justin and Katie Walker have taped a PSA for the Golf Channel which should beginning to air soon.  Katie is flying high as she played golf on that day with Justin.

Oh, just a short report from Megan, as she continues to spread the work of our hospitals.

Hi Sir Ralph,

It's me Megan, sorry I haven't written to you in so long. I have been very busy with school, Tae Kwon Do and all.

I had such a wonderful time at the East/West Game.  It was awesome seeing all of my Shriner Friends and their Ladies.  That was the VERY BEST part!!!

I also wanted to show you the cover for my book that I wrote and illustrated.  It is about my 1st visit to Shriner's Hospital and how I found it that it IS different from other hospitals.  It is also about my 1st meeting of a Shriner Clown.  I am planning on donating money to the hospitals and other Shriner causes.  I hope people like it.

I have been traveling about 1 to 4 times a month to different states to attend different Shriner events.  LOVING IT!!!!  You all are AWESOME!!!!

Well, need to go and get back to work.  I am actually starting another book.  It will be the 2nd in the "Don't Mess with Meggie"  series.

Hope to see you soon.

Over the centuries many well known men have been members of our Noble Craft

One of my masonic friends e mailed this to me, I thought I would pass it on to my friends..

Over the centuries many well known men have been members of our Noble Craft. For a few moments, please allow your imaginations to run wild and consider what may take place at the Installation of The Celestial Lodge, otherwise known as the Grand Lodge Above.

Even though it was late fall, there was a warm breeze blowing and the sun was setting behind the Lodge Hall. Gathered in the parking lot filled with their works were Bros Henry Ford, Ransom Olds, Walter Chrysler, John Willys and Andre Citroen. The only vehicle missing was Bro Hart Massey's tractor.

Greeting members in the entrance hall was Bro Cliff Arquette of Charley Weaver fame and Bro Ed Wynn. In the boardroom, a group of senior DeMolays were gathered including Bros Walter Disney, Chet Huntley, Wendell Corey, Van Johnson, Robert Cummings, John Steinbeck, Fred McMurray and John Cameron Swayze.

King Gillette, razor in hand, passed the lodge caretaker who was having a minor problem with his vacuum cleaner, which was quickly cleared up with the help of its inventor, Bro Frank Hoover, while at the other end of the hallway Bros Emmett Kelly, Clyde Beatty and all seven of the Ringling Bros were discussing the Shrine Circus.

Taking a quick look into the Banquet Hall, Bros John Molson, Frederick Pabst and Joseph Schlitz were busy rolling in some kegs of beer for Bros Sam Bronfman, late President of Seagrams Distillers, who was setting up the bar for the Festive Board to follow the Ceremony. Bro Colonel Harland Sanders was cooking up a storm in the kitchen and it was an easy guess as to what the evening meal would consist of .

The orchestra members for the dance to follow the Banquet were tuning. Members of this All-Star group included leader Paul Whiteman, WC Hardy, Nat King Cole, Irving Berlin, George M Cohan, Cyril Stapleton, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Al Jolson. Tonight's performance would be M.C.ed by Bros Arthur Godfrey and Danny Thomas.

Magical Bros Harry Houdini and Harry Blackstone were setting up their props while Bros WC Fields, Oliver Hardy, Bud Abbott, Harpo Marx, and Foster Brooks were fine tuning their comedy routines for tonight's show which was being produced by Bros Cecil B DeMille, Flo Ziegfeld, Louis B Mayer, Hall Wallis and DW Griffiths.

A number of sports celebrities were gathering together, including Bros Abe Saperstein, creator of the Harlem Globetrotters, who was explaining his version of the game to Bro James Naismith, the inventor of the game. They were joined by baseballers Bros Charles Ebbetts, Ty Cobb, Branch Rickey and Cy Young, the first pitcher to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

A little further along the hall was an array of masons dressed in knee breeches, lace cuffs and powdered wigs, others in tuxedos, including Bros Kit Carson, Davey Crockett and Buffalo Bill Cody, clad in their familiar buckskins, Chiefs Crazy Bull, Tecumseh and Joseph Brant in their native attire. Most colourful are the military uniforms of Lord Nelson, Lord Cornwallis, Captain James Cook, the Duke of Wellington and John Paul Jones.

I was gazing in awe at these members of Celestial Lodge, when the Grand Master, MW Bro Harry Truman, appeared from the preparation room accompanied by Bros John Jacob Astor, Luther Burbank, JC Penney, Adlai Stevenson and Jennings Bryan.

Bro John Diefenbaker had just signed the Tyler's Register with one of Bro John Shaeffer's pens. He was accompanied by Bros Robert Borden and RB Bennett. fellow Canadian Prime Ministers, and by Bro Joe Smallwood of Newfoundland.

At this time, the Tyler, Bro J Edgar Hoover, informed the brethren that the meeting was about to come to order.

On entering the lodge room the brethren were greeted by the Inner Guard, Bro Paul Revere. Seated already were polar explorers, Robert F Scott of England and Bro Richard E Bird of the United States, together with Matthew G Perky and Canada's Henry Larsen. Bro Charles Lindbergh could be seen in deep conversation with Bros Hap Arnold, Gus Grissom, Eddie Rickenbaker and Charles Kingsford-smith.

From the Junior Warden's station came a burst of laughter. Bro Will Rogers had brought broad smiles to the faces of the Royal personages gathered around him, including George 1, Frederick the .Great, Gustav V of Sweden and George VI. To the right of the Junior Warden's chair, architect Sir Christopher Wren was joined by Statue of Liberty sculptor, Frederic Bartholdi.

Bros Norman Vincent Peale and Peter Marshall, who would assume the Chaplain's duties this evening, were in conversation with the DuPonts, Peter and Victor, and the Rothschilds, James and Nathan.

Gathered around the Secretary's desk, Bro Rudyard Kipling was discussing the evening's proceedings with Bro Robert Burns, who was to give one of the Charges assisted by Bro Mark Twain. Also taking part were Bros Conan Doyle, Walter Scott, Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope and Robert Service.

The Grand Organist, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was discussing last minute changes with Bros Gilbert and Sullivan.

Bros Clark Gable, Peter Sellers, Wallace Beery, Douglas Fairbanks and Brian Donleavy were discussing boxing with champions Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson and Sugar Ray Robinson. Another small group, in the persons of Bros John Wayne, Hoot Gibson and Tom Mix, were listening to Bro William Thaddeus Phillips, also known as Butch Cassidy.

The founding members, Bros George Washington, Sir John A MacDonald, Guiseppe Garibaldi, Benito Jaurez, John Hancock and Ben Franklin were seated in the East. They have been joined by Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore. The Generals, Omar Bradley, Jimmy Doolittle, George C Marshall, John Pershing and Douglas McArthur, take their seats next to Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. The Lodge Treasurer, Bro Henry Knox was busy collecting dues from Bros Thomas E Dewey and William McKinley. The Master, MW Bro HRH The Duke of Connaught, has rapped the gavel to call the Lodge to order and it is now time for us to depart. With one last took at this brilliant assembly, one wonders what the public's perception of Freemasonry might be if they were able to visit such a lodge.

Masonic Trivia

  a, masonic Service Association, 1934

At one time, Golden Lodge #5, Stanstead, Canada occupied a lodge room, which straddled the boundary between Canada and the United States. There were entrances on both sides of the border.

Washington Chapter #3 of Portsmouth, NH announced its meetings via the town crier, who received from 6 to 25 cents for his work.

In 1872 the commissioner of Patents held that the Masonic emblem could not be used in a trademark or trade name for commercial purposes.

In Hammer v. State, 173 Indiana, 199 (1909), the Supreme Court ruled that it was a criminal offense to wear the emblem of any society or organization of which one is not a member. The court based its decision on the fact that the membership in such societies is the result of fitness and selection and that the wearing of such emblems by non-members is a deceit and false pretense.

In Robinson v. Yates City Lodge, 86 Illinois, 598 (1877), a court ruled that an expelled Mason was not entitled to the return of his degree fees. The court held that the plaintiff voluntarily paid the fees and the expulsion under the provisions of the rules of the organization does not constitute the rescission of a contract under which the fees were paid.

Frederick A Bartholdi, a freemason, designed the statue of Liberty in NY harbor. Grand Lodge of NY laid the corner stone on August 5, 1885.

Bernard Pierre Mangam, Marshall of France and Senator was appointed Grand Master of the Grand Orient of France and served from 1862 to 1865. This is unusual because he was not a Mason. He was appointed by Emperor Napoleon III.

The letters of the English word GOD are the first three letters of Hebrew words for beauty, strength, and wisdom. G in Gomez, O in Oz, D in Dabar.

In 1860 in Limerick, Ireland, there as found a stone in a small chapel, dated 1517, with the following inscription: "I will serve to live with love & care, upon the level, and by the square."

Francis Stephens, the Duke of Lorraine, received the first two Masonic degrees in 1731 in a special lodge convened at The Hague, Holland, becoming the first known royal freemason. Later he received the third degree in England. In 1735 renounced his title.

Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotine was a member of Concorde Fraternelle Lodge of Paris and a member of the French Assembly. He obviously invented the device that bears his name and was later executed with one.

The Rev. William Dodd, first Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of England, was hanged for forgery on June 2nd, 1777.

In 1839 the Mormons left Missouri and settled in the area of Nauvoo, IL. On October 15, 1841, the IL Grand Master issued a dispensation to form a lodge at Nauvoo. On March 15th, 1842, Joseph Smith received his first degree and the others shortly after. Certain irregularities were reported - in five months the lodge initiated 256 candidates and 243 were raised. After investigation, the grand master revoked the dispensation, but the lodge continued to work. On April 5, 1844, the Mormon masons dedicated a Masonic Temple. IL Masons got in trouble for taking part in the ceremony. Opposition to the group and internal dissension led to the assassination of Joseph Smith and the removal of the Mormons from IL.

Operative Lodge #150 in Aberdeen, Scotland is unusual in that it is only open to operative stonemasons.

Dr. Edward Jenner, in 1789 discovered the vaccination process against smallpox. He was worshipful master of Faith and Friendship Lodge #270 in Berkeley, England at the time.

In July 1863, Confederate raiders rode into Versailles, IN, capturing the local militia and stealing the county treasury. The next day, General John Morgan (CSA), learned that his men had also made off with the jewels of the local lodge. They were returned the following day. July 2, 1751, Ferdinand VI of Spain issued an edict against Freemasonry. Father Jose Torrubia secured a special dispensation from the Pope, joined a lodge, secured the names of its members, and proceeded to have them arrested. Hundreds were arrested, persecuted, and imprisoned.

When Mussolini gained control of Italy, Masonic lodges were declared illegal and the grand master was arrested, tried, and imprisoned, where he died.

Mussolini also ordered all Masonic references removed, including the emblems on the base of Garibaldi's monument in Rome. After the restoration of the republic, fascist emblems were removed and the Masonic emblems restored.

In Fascist Spain under Franco, it was a crime to be a freemason. Masons convicted had to serve prison terms equal in years to the number of Masonic degrees possessed. Master Mason =3D 3 years.

Winnedumah Lodge #287 of Bishop, CA holds its meetings at 270 feet below sea level, the lowest lodge in North America.

In 1954 Martin's Station Lodge No. 188 of VA was opened 952 feet below the surface of Cumberland Mountain in Cudjo's Cave, which lies between Cumberland Gap, Tenn. and Middleburo, KY. 345 Masons were present and a MM degree was conferred.
