Fraternally yours, Michael Dib Chief Rabban
2009 Imperial Representative Moslem Shrin

From: "pathasst" <mikedib@ameritech. net> Brother Glenn, Our system of 22 Shrine Hospitals for Children, throughout North America, is experiencing the same economic downturn as the rest of the country. The endowment fund, which operates all facilities and guarantees health care to our children at no cost, has decreased from $8 billion to approximately $5.6 Billion in the last couple of years. The investment portfolio of the endowment fund is directly proportional to the Dow Johns index.

Therefore, the Imperial Council and Board of Trustees of the Shriners Hospitals are being proactive in their approach to the situation. There have been multiple proposals in dealing with the issue, and they will be discussed during the Imperial Council Session the first week of July in San Antonio, TX.

We are hearing about the "closure" of up to six hospitals, including the Erie Hospital, which is one of the major institutions we utilize to deliver care to our children in SE Michigan. First of all, NO Shriner Hospital can be closed without the affirmative vote of the Imperial Council (over approximately 2000 voting members/Imperial Representatives) . Second, the word "closure" is being misinterpreted. In today's health care environment we have increasingly seen a shift from smaller 24/7 hospitals to Short Stay Ambulatory Care Centers. These centers would NOT provide 24 hour care, especially intensive care units. These centers would provide same day surgeries and outpatient follow up physician visits and treatments. Five out of the proposed six hospitals being considered for this currently have NO intensive care units, and provide for such services. Re-designating these hospitals to Ambulatory Care Centers would realize a significant savings, due to decrease of staffing/maintenance/facilities needed to run a 24/7 operation.

The quality of care provided to our children would not decrease at all, however, some procedures requiring overnight observations would be transferred to other Shrine Hospitals.

The one hospital that is in jeopardy of actually closing is the Galveston Hospital. It has been determined that the financial demand necessary to bring the physical facility to the pre-hurricane damaged state cannot be justified when the Houston Hospital is less than 40 miles away and may be converted to handle/maintain a burns hospital with less financial expenditure. Also, the Galveston facility costs of creations were defrayed by contributions of the University of Texas system in Galveston, and they have pulled out of the region, demanding more financial input from the Shrine System. One option is to lease out the facilities at Galveston to the University which will assist in converting the Houston Shrine Hospital to fit our needs.

Brothers, there are many ideas being discussed, however, I am confident that the adequate professionals/ leaders of the Board of Trustees of the Shriner Hospitals for Children will be dilligent in their process and ensure that the quality of care we provide for our children will never be affected.

Just an fyi, the endowment fund levels is currently at the same level as it was in 2000, like I previously mentioned we are directly related to the Dow Jones Index and when this global economic crisis finally resolves, we should be seeing the same results.

Meet Connor

Having no prior indication of the condition, Jack and Kelly Wright were stunned when their son, Connor, was born May 27, 2006, with a bilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP). The Wrights were not sure of their next step.

“Our emotions ran the full gamut,” says Kelly, “we were shocked, scared, upset and confused.”

Shortly after arriving home from the hospital, a local Shriner told Jack and Kelly of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago. The family’s first visit confirmed their prenotion that the hospital was a special place: the staff provided the information, support, and care that the Wrights were looking for.

Connor’s initial CLP team was comparable to a small army! By meeting with a psychologist, dentist, orthodontist, plastic surgeon, surgical nurse, social worker and audiologist, the Wrights felt as though questions were thoroughly answered and their choices laid out for them. Mary O’Gara, director of the cleft/craniofacial team at the Chicago Shriners Hospital, explained the Wrights options at length and clarified what the family should be looking for in a doctor and medical care.

To date Connor has had his lip and palate repaired as well as three sets of ear tubes. Connor, or “C-man”, can be found riding his bike, swimming, and hitting the golf ball. A family who loves sports and the outdoors, summer nights call for grilled cheeseburgers and smores at the Wright household.

“Shriners hospital is all about making the child feel healthy, normal, and special. Every visit is filled with doctors who know Connor’s name and who know our family,” says Kelly.

The Wrights are quick to express their gratitude for Connor’s care, and have spearheaded an annual golf tournament fundraiser to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. The event tied in perfectly with the family’s athletic expertise.

“Shriners hospital was an answer to our prayers. Not only did we feel we were able to provide our son the best treatment for immediate care, but we also knew we would be able to provide him with long-term care,” says Kelly, “That is the most unimaginable comfort for our family of five.”

The court based its decision on the fact that the membership in such societies is the result of fitness and selection and that the wearing of such emblems by non-members is a deceit and false pretense.

In Robinson v. Yates City Lodge, 86 Illinois, 598 (1877), a court ruled that an expelled Mason was not entitled to the return of his degree fees. The court held that the plaintiff voluntarily paid the fees and the expulsion under the provisions of the rules of the organization does not constitute the rescission of a contract under which the fees were paid.

'No' 'But you gave them a lot of money, do you expect to get it back?' 'If they are able to pay me back, they will. It makes no difference to me; they are brother masons in trouble and I am only doing my duty.' I said to my self, 'If that is Masonry, I will take some of it myself.'"

*The Working Tools of an E-Mason

I now present to you the working tools of an e-mason. They are the mouse... the keyboard... and the modem...
The mouse is to move within the desktop, the keyboard to input the date, and the modem to publish the date to cyberspace.

But as we are not, however, here assembled as Computer Nerds, but rather as Operative or E-Masons, and to us these tools are downloaded as vehicles of moral significance and to show us the meaning of E-Masons.

And thus we apply them ---

The mouse teaches us to keep within the bounds of the screen - a square wherein which we must all meet.

The Keyboard to show us that communication will lead us to a better understanding to each other and the rest of mankind.

And the Modem to teach us that even when we are alone on the most remote part of the globe, we may meet and gain moral sustenance from each other and thus learn more of the wonderful works of the GAOTU.

Imperial Sir George Mitchell, Rameses Shriners

ISN'T IT GREAT TO BE A SHRINER???
         It's FEZtastic!

According to some internet polls, the two favorite holidays are Christmas and New Year's.  Both holidays bring thoughts of family, caring and giving.  The season presents a great opportunity for you to give a good man a gift that you once received - one that he will cherish for the rest of his life - that is the gift of membership into our fraternity.
Don't be bashful about sharing your feelings for our fraternity if the occasion arises.  You may be asked to share that gift that we all treasure.  Rather than wearing out like other gifts often do, membership in Masonry and the Shrine will actually get better with use.  Your membership gift will ultimately lead to other good men joining in the future.  They too will belong to the world's greatest fraternity making everyday a good day to be a Shriner!

Young Shriners Leave Their Mark
By Illustrious Sir John Tunnell, P.P., Recorder

About 10 years ago, Maskat Shriners in Wichita Falls, Texas, began taking in new members in their 20s and 30s who wanted to try to some new and innovative things. They asked the Potentate for permission to form a noncompetitive unit that could concentrate on raising money for Maskat and also help all the units be successful.  Many of these young men were already members of competing units and intended to remain active in those. They wanted an opportunity to do more for their temple. The Potentate gave his approval, and the Wild Fez Unit was formed.

It took these young men a few years to "come into their own," so to speak, but they had plenty of support. Nearly all were members of other units, and as word about the Wild Fez Unit got around, it began to grow in membership. Now, many of the older members want to help in the Wild Fez endeavors, as well. The unit has the wholehearted support of every active member of Maskat Shriners.

Wild Fez Nobles - Jeff Browning, Kevin Bumgarner & Toby Smith

Four years ago, the Wild Fez unit officers decided to spearhead a temple fundraising project. Together with then-High Priest and Prophet Mark Terry, they began planning for an outdoor concert to be held on the temple's 30-acre property. I would like to be able to say the concert, held in 2006, was a complete success, but we had weather problems and did not cover the expenses. But, we considered it a work-in-progress with unlimited potential, and tried again. The 2007 concert had a great turnout, and the Wild Fez Unit was able to cover the expenses for both years and make some money for the temple.

They are expecting a crowd of 10,000 at this year's concert. If all goes well, they should double last year's net profit. Needless to say, a project of this magnitude requires all nobles and ladies to work together. Appropriately named "ShrineFest," the concert has been a project involving the entire membership and is a unifying force for us. Without ShrineFest Director Jeff Browning, Potentate Mark Terry and the Wild Fezzes, it would never have become a reality.

In addition to organizing events for their unit, the Wild Fezzes make themselves available to help and support other temple units. For example, they may help with the hospitality room or the cooking for other events, or just provide manpower when needed, as they did when Maskat hosted the Texas Shrine Convention in 2006.

Having been a Shriner for 29 years, I consider the Wild Fez Unit a wonderful addition to Maskat Shriners. These men are knowledgeable, youthful and energetic. They inject their enthusiasm into this and every temple project.

About Our Kids

Marty Sheedy is thrilled to be a ShrinerMarty in parade

Marty Sheedy, 21, of Dearborn, Mich., became a Shriner as soon as possible.

A member of Moslem Shriners in Southfield, Mich., since 2007, Sheedy has already had opportunities to speak on behalf of Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children, and has even attended his first Imperial Council Session.

"I can't begin to explain what I felt the first day at the opening session - seeing all the Shriners wearing their fezzes," Sheedy said. "Being a Shriners Hospitals patient, becoming a Shriner and then attending such a major, important event was very powerful and touching. Even though I couldn't vote, I attended most of the meetings so I could learn as much as possible."

During the Session, Sheedy met NASCAR driver David Ragan, who recently named Shriners Hospitals his official charity. "Meeting David Ragan was great," Sheedy said. "He seems so motivated to help our organization, which is awesome."

Becoming a Shriner is Sheedy's way of saying "thank you" to the organization that has made such a difference in his life. Sheedy, who has arthrogryposis - a condition that limits flexibility at the joints - was a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children - Chicago for 16 years. During that time, he underwent six surgeries and made countless trips to the hospital.

In March, he returned to the hospital as a Shriner and spoke at the annual Divan Conference. After sharing his thoughts on becoming a member of the fraternity and updating everyone on his activities and accomplishments, Sheedy received a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience.

Sheedy is enrolled at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, where he is studying business and management, and serves on the local city commission on disability concerns. He has established the Project Scissor Gait Foundation to educate, promote and provide research opportunities on the scissor gait walking pattern, which Sheedy uses. All of these activities fit together well with Sheedy's reason for becoming a Shriner, which was to show his appreciation and to help others.

"The best thing about being a Shriner is I know I am working to help give back for the treatment that was provided to me," Sheedy said. "My family and I know that if it was not for the Chicago Shriners Hospital, I would not be doing half of the things I do today."

Despite the demands of his studies and his foundation, Sheedy finds the time to actively participate in Shriners activities. He belongs to the Taylor Shrine Club's Tin Lizzie Unit and is on the Boulevard Shrine Club's special events committee. Marty was one of the featured speakers at the Shriners Membership Seminar in Tampa last month.  He also hopes to have the opportunity to share his story at as many Shriners Hospitals and temples as possible.

84th Annual East-West Shrine Game

East West gameThe 84th East-West Shrine Game will kick-off at 3 p.m. CST on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at University of Houston's John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. The game supports Shriners Hospitals for Children, the beneficiary of the event.

The East-West Game pits all-star college senior athletes who attend schools in Eastern North America against those attending schools in Western North America. The game and its preceding practice sessions attract dozens of scouts from professional football teams. East-West alumni include Tom Brady, Brett Farve, Walter Payton, Dick Butkus and other football greats.

The Sunday preceding the game, players will visit Shriners Hospitals for Children - Houston to tour the facility, visit patients and experience the Shriners Hospitals mission. The hospital will also be open for public tours.

"When players get to witness first-hand who and what they are working for, it makes the entire effort more meaningful," said Ralph Semb, chairman of the Board of Trustees for Shriners Hospitals.

The East-West Shrine Game will be broadcast live on ESPN2. For more information about the game and tickets, please visit

One of my masonic friends e mailed this to me, I thought I would pass it on to my friends..

Over the centuries many well known men have been members of our Noble Craft. For a few moments, please allow your imaginations to run wild and consider what may take place at the Installation of The Celestial Lodge, otherwise known as the Grand Lodge Above.

Even though it was late fall, there was a warm breeze blowing and the sun was setting behind the Lodge Hall. Gathered in the parking lot filled with their works were Bros Henry Ford, Ransom Olds, Walter Chrysler, John Willys and Andre Citroen. The only vehicle missing was Bro Hart Massey's tractor.

Greeting members in the entrance hall was Bro Cliff Arquette of Charley Weaver fame and Bro Ed Wynn. In the boardroom, a group of senior DeMolays were gathered including Bros Walter Disney, Chet Huntley, Wendell Corey, Van Johnson, Robert Cummings, John Steinbeck, Fred McMurray and John Cameron Swayze.

King Gillette, razor in hand, passed the lodge caretaker who was having a minor problem with his vacuum cleaner, which was quickly cleared up with the help of its inventor, Bro Frank Hoover, while at the other end of the hallway Bros Emmett Kelly, Clyde Beatty and all seven of the Ringling Bros were discussing the Shrine Circus.

Taking a quick look into the Banquet Hall, Bros John Molson, Frederick Pabst and Joseph Schlitz were busy rolling in some kegs of beer for Bros Sam Bronfman, late President of Seagrams Distillers, who was setting up the bar for the Festive Board to follow the Ceremony. Bro Colonel Harland Sanders was cooking up a storm in the kitchen and it was an easy guess as to what the evening meal would consist of .

The orchestra members for the dance to follow the Banquet were tuning. Members of this All-Star group included leader Paul Whiteman, WC Hardy, Nat King Cole, Irving Berlin, George M Cohan, Cyril Stapleton, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Al Jolson. Tonight's performance would be M.C.ed by Bros Arthur Godfrey and Danny Thomas.

Magical Bros Harry Houdini and Harry Blackstone were setting up their props while Bros WC Fields, Oliver Hardy, Bud Abbott, Harpo Marx, and Foster Brooks were fine tuning their comedy routines for tonight's show which was being produced by Bros Cecil B DeMille, Flo Ziegfeld, Louis B Mayer, Hall Wallis and DW Griffiths.

A number of sports celebrities were gathering together, including Bros Abe Saperstein, creator of the Harlem Globetrotters, who was explaining his version of the game to Bro James Naismith, the inventor of the game. They were joined by baseballers Bros Charles Ebbetts, Ty Cobb, Branch Rickey and Cy Young, the first pitcher to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

A little further along the hall was an array of masons dressed in knee breeches, lace cuffs and powdered wigs, others in tuxedos, including Bros Kit Carson, Davey Crockett and Buffalo Bill Cody, clad in their familiar buckskins, Chiefs Crazy Bull, Tecumseh and Joseph Brant in their native attire. Most colourful are the military uniforms of Lord Nelson, Lord Cornwallis, Captain James Cook, the Duke of Wellington and John Paul Jones.

I was gazing in awe at these members of Celestial Lodge, when the Grand Master, MW Bro Harry Truman, appeared from the preparation room accompanied by Bros John Jacob Astor, Luther Burbank, JC Penney, Adlai Stevenson and Jennings Bryan.

Bro John Diefenbaker had just signed the Tyler's Register with one of Bro John Shaeffer's pens. He was accompanied by Bros Robert Borden and RB Bennett. fellow Canadian Prime Ministers, and by Bro Joe Smallwood of Newfoundland.

At this time, the Tyler, Bro J Edgar Hoover, informed the brethren that the meeting was about to come to order.

On entering the lodge room the brethren were greeted by the Inner Guard, Bro Paul Revere. Seated already were polar explorers, Robert F Scott of England and Bro Richard E Bird of the United States, together with Matthew G Perky and Canada's Henry Larsen. Bro Charles Lindbergh could be seen in deep conversation with Bros Hap Arnold, Gus Grissom, Eddie Rickenbaker and Charles Kingsford-smith.

From the Junior Warden's station came a burst of laughter. Bro Will Rogers had brought broad smiles to the faces of the Royal personages gathered around him, including George 1, Frederick the .Great, Gustav V of Sweden and George VI. To the right of the Junior Warden's chair, architect Sir Christopher Wren was joined by Statue of Liberty sculptor, Frederic Bartholdi.

Bros Norman Vincent Peale and Peter Marshall, who would assume the Chaplain's duties this evening, were in conversation with the DuPonts, Peter and Victor, and the Rothschilds, James and Nathan.

Gathered around the Secretary's desk, Bro Rudyard Kipling was discussing the evening's proceedings with Bro Robert Burns, who was to give one of the Charges assisted by Bro Mark Twain. Also taking part were Bros Conan Doyle, Walter Scott, Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope and Robert Service.

The Grand Organist, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was discussing last minute changes with Bros Gilbert and Sullivan.

Bros Clark Gable, Peter Sellers, Wallace Beery, Douglas Fairbanks and Brian Donleavy were discussing boxing with champions Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson and Sugar Ray Robinson. Another small group, in the persons of Bros John Wayne, Hoot Gibson and Tom Mix, were listening to Bro William Thaddeus Phillips, also known as Butch Cassidy.

The founding members, Bros George Washington, Sir John A MacDonald, Guiseppe Garibaldi, Benito Jaurez, John Hancock and Ben Franklin were seated in the East. They have been joined by Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore. The Generals, Omar Bradley, Jimmy Doolittle, George C Marshall, John Pershing and Douglas McArthur, take their seats next to Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. The Lodge Treasurer, Bro Henry Knox was busy collecting dues from Bros Thomas E Dewey and William McKinley. The Master, MW Bro HRH The Duke of Connaught, has rapped the gavel to call the Lodge to order and it is now time for us to depart. With one last took at this brilliant assembly, one wonders what the public's perception of Freemasonry might be if they were able to visit such a lodge.

Have a great day, Brother Morley
